Footnote :- William met Ellen I guess, when he was a border at the Crummenauer's home. Ellen's father John Peter was a baker from Germany and the family lived above or behind the shop in the High Street, Lambeth.

After their marriage William and Ellen lived in Mitre Street, Lambeth. Then sometime between 1870 and 1872 they and the family moved to Upper George Street, Greenwich. As he was a boiler maker, they most likely moved there for work reasons. His younger brother Henry (also a boiler maker) made the same move around the same time.

On census night 1881, William Robert as he was known, Ellen and surviving children were living at that address in Greenwich. See attachment (A 006), except the eldest Rosina Ellen, see attachment on her page.

The different spelling for the surname on this attachment was in this case, caused I believe by some clerks when writing a word that ended in a double (s) used the old english (s) that looked like an (f) together with the modern (s), which looked a bit like this (Curnefs). When hand written and the top was knock off of the (f) the old english style it looked like a (y) thus Curneys instead of Curness. You can see examples of this in some certificates and parish records. These can be found on the baptism record for William and the baptism records for six of his children.

On census night 1901 William Robert, Ellen Louisa and their two youngest sons Walter John and Alfred Charles were living at 96 Colomb Street. Greenwich, together with the eldest daughter Rosina Ellen. See attachment (A 013)
